In Mumbai like every year the Ganesh festival will be celebrated but this time with restriction of 18 feet. Yes you got it right! This year the maximum height of a Ganesh Idol will be just 18 ft. that too including the base of 3 feet which makes the idol to 15 feet. This decision has been taken by the organisers of Ganesh festival in Mumbai and the Idol makers.
No high Rise Ganesh Idols:
The decision that can actually prove to be the most environment-friendly one is taken because of the last year’s mishaps that included an incident in Chinchpokli. It was a 22 feet tall Idol of Tejukaya Ganesh Mandal which got damaged and collapsed, injuring some devotees. Incidents like these disturb the devotees and some also consider it as a bad sign from God. The other incident is of falling rooftop killing and injuring people who wanted to have a look at the gigantic idols of the lord.
To avoid such calamities in this year and in future joint decision has been taken regarding the height of ganesh idols. Though there are other reasons also like being eco-friendly and saving the nature, the main reason is to avoid such mishaps.
Although this decisions has been taken, the Lalbaug Sarvajanik Utsav Mandal has informed that they will only take the final decisions once they get a green signal from Devotees, since their idol is 22 ft tall traditionally.
This decision will obviously make the devotees sad who want to see large idols but the positive side is that it will solve traffic issues that happen on the D day. During immersion those mandals who have to avoid flyovers due to the height of idols and have to take a longer route will also save time if the height is reduced.
Though it has its pros and cons it will really help nature. And yes size of the idol doesn’t matter, God is God. Our faith should be strong enough.
