Wearing Sari Can Cause Cancer : Doctors Call It Sari Cancer

Wearing saree can now lead to cancer and this concept is not new. As Doctors say, sari cancer has got increasing number of cases these days. The journal released in November by Indian Medical Association reports that Grant Medical College in Mumbai have reported cases of what they are referring to as sari cancer.

“We have treated three women for waist or sari cancer in the last couple of years,” says author of the article Dr G D Bakhshi, who is an associate professor of surgery at Grant Medical College,Mumbai

How Sari Cancer Happens?

Sari Cancer is not caused by saree but it is caused by petticoat that is worn before wearing saree. The sari petticoat, if tied in the same place day after day, can cause chronic irritation along the waistline. The constant irritation can result in scaling and pigmentation and it is not noticed by sari-wearers until it gets chronic. Grant Medical College got 3 cases of saree cancer which turned malignant due to negligence.

Can Sari Cancer be Cured?

Treatment depends on the stage at which the cancer has been diagnosed. If detected early, it can be treated with reconstructive surgery. But if the cancer has spread to the lymph nodes then it needs to remove the malignancy. If detected early the cancer is curable.

How to Prevent Sari Cancer?

Doctors advices the following to prevent saree cancer:

  • Wearing loose petticoats
  • Switch from the usual rope-like (nada) belt to broader ones like that is worn on pants which reduces pressure on the area
  • Shifting to dress materials and pants/trousers (Atleast at home)

The next time you drape a sari, you might want to re-tie that petticoat knot. Please do it!
