“Saving” Practices that Contact Lens Users Must Avoid

Contact lens have become a trend nowadays. Millions and millions of users around the world are enjoying its perks of these lens to either improve their vision or make a fashion statement by giving their eyes that dramatic look. In the usage of these contact lens, some have resorted to practices that they think can help them save a few bucks. In reality, these practices have been deemed as unhealthy. These can increase the risk factor for eye infections even for coloured contact lens. Here are a few “saving” practices that contact lens users should avoid to keep their eyes away from danger:

Buying contact lenses without prescription from eye doctor

Contact lens users think they can save by avoiding going to an eye doctor and getting a prescription. They can save money, but they can’t save their eyes. A prescription is always a must to ensure that the contact lens buyer will get what is intended for him and her. It is to guarantee that the lens he or she will be getting is the right one. Users should always see an eye doctor before buying contact lens. And always get an eye exam every two years in order to get a new and valid contact prescription.

Wearing contact lens past their recommended usage

Contact lens differ in wearing schedules. There are daily contact lens, weekly, bi-weekly, monthly and quarterly, which are all called disposable. There are also non-disposable or traditional lens that can be replaced after a year. Some users buy daily disposable contact lens since they are cheaper and think it is okay to use it even after a day. Usage dates are there for a reason. lens worn past their recommended dates are prone to protein build-up that can cause an allergic reaction or even conjunctivitis. Overused lens are more susceptible in letting in dust and dirt between your contacts and eyes. These dust and dirt can scratch the surface of the eye and create corneal abrasion which can lead to corneal ulcer. Contact lens should be replaced after recommended usage date to avoid any of these complications.

Reusing contact lens solutions

Contact lens solutions are used to disinfect the lens before and after usage. Reusing the solution will decrease the capability of it to disinfect thus defeating the purpose of cleaning it. Users should always use fresh solution at all times, especially when storing the lens in their case.

Using water to clean contact lenses

Some people substitute solutions with water in cleaning their contacts. This is one of the worst practices because water harbour chemicals and bacterium that can cause eye infections. Contact lens solutions to be used are those that are prescribed by the eye doctor or a sterile saline solution.   These practices may help save money but these will not aid in improving the eyes. Cutting costs should not endanger safety. Top priority must always be the health of our eyes. As they say, prevention is better than cure, in this case, cheaper.
