India is Polio Free Now

India is Polio free now

There is something to rejoice about in Indian healthcare services especially the vaccination department. Govt. of India, over the year, made lot of effort to eradicate polio from the root. With the help of Rotary and other organizations, UNICEF and Govt. of India together started a cause to make India Polio free! Their target was to bring down 2,00,000 affected patients to Zero. They have achieved their target. This was impossible task but yes, India did it! If no previously undisclosed cases are uncovered in the coming weeks, India will be removed the list of endemic countries, leaving only Pakistan, Afghanistan and Nigeria.

“Marching ahead, the goal now is to sustain this momentum,” said Deepak Kapur, head of Rotary’s polio eradication program in India.

Lets learn something about Polio:

In the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (PEI), acute flaccid paralysis is defined as:

Any case of AFP in a child aged less than 15 years, or any case of paralytic illness in a person of any age when it is suspected:

Acute: rapid progression of paralysis from onset to maximum paralysis
Flaccid: loss of muscle tone, “floppy” – as opposed to spastic or rigid
Paralysis: weakness, loss of voluntary movement

Any case meeting this definition undergoes a thorough investigation to determine if the paralysis is caused by polio.
