HOW TO: Find that your Diamond is Real or Fake?

Diamond purchasing is a great task but you should always make sure you know how to differentiate between a fake and a real one. • Fog Test:

The simplest way to find out if your diamond is fake or real is to perform fog test. Put the it in front of your mouth and fog it like you fog a mirror. If the fog remains on the stone for 3-4 seconds then it is fake, as the fog evaporates instantly on the real diamond. A real one is very good in dispersing heat.

• Diamond Tester:

• Transparency Test:

The transparency test is one of the simplest ways to test if the diamond is fake or real. Place the it upside down on a newspaper. If you can read the writings through it then it is a fake diamond.

• Weighing Test:

The weighing test can be used to find out if your priced possession is real or fake. The best fake diamond is cubic zirconia and it weighs 50%-55% more than the real diamond of the same size and shape. Use carat or gram scale for weighing.

• Reflection Test:

A real diamond reflects shades of grey. If you see rainbow reflections then you may be holding a fake one.

• Magnification Test:

You can use a magnifying glass to check the tiny imperfections in a diamond. Small cracks, pinpoints etc. are flaws and are known as inclusions. The lesser the inclusions, the better the diamond is. If you couldn’t detect any flaw then either you have a real diamond or a completely fake one. If you are in doubt then take it to a jeweler.

• UV Test:

If you have access to UV or black light then you may determine if your diamond is fake or real. Place the it under the light if it exhibits blue fluorescent then it’s a real diamond. If it exhibits green or yellow then it might possibly be a fake one.

• Water Test:

Place the stone in water. If the it sinks then it is a real diamond and if it floats then it is a fake diamond.

Always ask for a certificate before making purchase and make sure it is from the diamond grading authorities like GIA, IGI or independent appraisers affiliated with professional organizations.
