IIT Professor Develops an Alternative to Petrol and Diesel

After 25 years of nurturing the dream of a clean, green and hopefully inexpensive fuel, IIT-Delhi professor L M Das has developed an alternative to petrol and diesel – a technology where Hydrogen gas can be used as an automobile fuel.

“Hydrogen can be made from both renewable and non-renewable sources. It’s made from water. On combustion, it gives back water. The noxious emission from burning petroleum products is almost completely absent here,” the Professor of the Centre for Energy Studies at IIT Delhi.

It has already started running on Delhi streets. The three wheeler vehicles are ferrying around Pragati Maiden since months now. Just one kilogram of gas is enough for 70 km.

“Abroad, they concentrate on fuel cells. But in India, internal combustion engines have already been operated on CNG. So graduating from CNG to hydrogen would be easier,” said Professor Das.

The United Nations Industrial Development Organisation and International Consortium has agreed to take this innovation forward. UNIDO has granted $500 million fund to take forward the project and bring it in use. The professor has won many awards as well.

Currently, Mahindra is under pilot testing of the new fuel and if successful, it will be soon on roads near you.

I was in a Hydrogen fuel driven car in 1995 in Denmark.

Hydrogen Vehicles were there since long.

What is new of this, I don't know.

Here is excellent story published in 2009(not 2012):

Homemade Hydrogen Motorcycle Is Ugly, But It Runs.

Alex Bell and Andres Pacheco, a pair of engineering majors at Swarthmore College, told us they spent two years and about $10,000 cobbling the Frankenbike together for a class project examining the viability of hydrogen-powered transportation.
